in the Station shooting at every one; come up some other way.
Our Indians then extended across the hillside to the right and
got up to the married quarters. I went back to the road, made 2
detour and got up to the married quarters from the sast.
way up I heard 5 or 6 shots and 2 bullets struck near me.
I found out from Indian police what had happened. I sent one
I.P.C. out to the east to watch that side of the Station, and
posted others at different points of the quarters with orders
to fire on sight of B.543.or anything suspicious. It was now
about 6.20 p.m. At intervals I heard shots fired from the
Station, and the Indians and myself also fired at the Station.
I saw no sign of life in the Station. About 7.30 p.m. I heard
shouts from the Station, and learnt from Xhe munshi that B.722
was shouting that he wanted to come out. On my order the Indians
ceased fire and the munshi shouted back to B.722 to come out,

the D.I.N. (Inspector Brennan) reached the married quarters.

came out and joined us. About 7.45 p.m. the A.S.P., the D.I.N.,
myself and some Indians started crawling up the hillside to the
Station. It was now pretty dark. We got through the fence gate
and up to the compound wall. On the way up Sergt. Madgwick
joined us. I was posted at the S.W. corner of the buildings with
instruction to watch the west side. About 8.30 p.m. I saw what
I took to be an Indian's head bob up inside the compound and
above the wall just opposite me. The heard disappeared but
almost at once reappeared. I lifted my revolver to fire, but it
bobbed down again. I reached up over the wall and fired a shot
downwards. Just before I fire I heard a voice call "No, no, no.
The voice came from where I had seen the head bob down. I ran
to the compound gate, and standing just inside fired 5 more
shots along the left hand wall. I saw nothing and heard nothing.
I say that the head that bobbed up was that of an Indian because
